Population dynamics of Caspian sand smelt (Atherina caspia) in Gorgan Bay-southeastern Caspian Sea
author
Abstract:
This study was carried out to investigate population dynamic of Caspian sand smelt (A. caspia) based on a monthly sampling in northern coast of Gorgan bay, between the estuary and canal of Khozeini, during its migration to coastal areas from March to September 2017. A total of 800 samples were collected using beach siene. Length frequency analysis revealed that there is significant difference between abundance of males and females, so that there was no male in some elder length groups. Length-weight relationship was W=0.007L2.906 for males and W= 0.008L2.846 for females, indicating negative allometric growth for both sexes. After fitting the regression using least square method, the relationship was W=0.006L3.002and W= 0.005L3.071 for males and females respectively. Electronic length frequency analysis (ELEFAN) using response surface analysis resulted Von Bertalanfy growth equation as for males and for females. Growth curves showed that length and weight increments occur up to age of 3+. 3 cohorts were observed for both sexes of the studied population. Natural mortality using Pauly's experimental equation calculated as 1.640 for males and 1.274 for females.

Population dynamics of sharp nose mullet Chelon saliens (Risso, 1810) in Gorgan bay-southeast Caspian Sea
This study was conducted to determine growth parameters and mortality of sharp nose mullet (Cheloc saliens). A total of 442 specimens collected using small beach siene in Gorgan bay from June to October two successive years of 2016 and 2017. The samples included 210 males and 232 females. Growth parameters calculated using Gulland and Holt method, and the length frequency analysis done using EL...
full textDistribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the surface sediments of Gorgan Bay, Caspian Sea.
The level and source of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in the surface sediments from the Gorgan Bay, Caspian Sea. The sum of 16 PAHs (ΣPAH16) concentrations varied from 107.87 to 516.18 ng g(-1)dry weight, with average value of 270.96 ± 150.47 ng g(-1)dry weight. Ecological risk assessment of PAHs, indicated that adverse biological effects caused by acenaphthene, n...
full textDiversity and distribution of larval and juvenile fish in nearshore waters of the Southeastern Caspian Sea and Gorgan Bay
Occurrence and distribution of larval and juvenile fish was investigated in nearshore waters of the southeastern Caspian Sea including the Gorgan Bay. Samples were collected during seven surveys using a fine mesh beach-seine in five sampling sites from July 2014 to June 2015. A total of 15500 individuals mostly juvenile were captured, representing 18 species from 8 families. Most juveniles belo...
full textInvestigating the density and frequency of zooplankton in the Southeastern Basin of the Caspian Sea (Gorgan Bay)
Zooplanktons have an important role in food chain of the aquatic ecosystems, which acts as a food chain link between producers (phytoplankton) and higher nutritional levels. The purpose of this research was to identify and study the zooplankton density in the southeastern basin of the Caspian Sea (Gorgan Bay). Sampling was performed seasonally and samples were collected by zooplankton net (36 c...

The heavy metals concentrations including Zinc, Copper, Lead and Cadmium (Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd) in water and sediments in Gorgan Bay and their accumulation in Rutilus frisii kutum, Acipenser persicus, Rutilus rutilus caspicus and Cyprinus carpio organs (gills, muscle, kidney and liver) were investigated. There was substantial increase in concentration of heavy m...
